Westland School

Progressive School Since 1949 28-Sep-2020

Founded in 1949, Westland is a small close-knit community with an inquiry-based, integrated social studies core. The curriculum, which develops thematic studies, deeply embeds the arts, science, woodworking and gardening throughout the academic base. Blocks and other basic materials are central to the children’s work and further the learning goals of collaboration, ability to access and analyze information, taking initiative, thinking critically, and expressing curiosity, inquisitiveness, and imagination. Children have functional jobs both in their classrooms and in the school at large. Parent involvement is also a major strength in the school’s life. Both of these provide models, along with the daily functioning of our multi-age classrooms, for the participation in a democratic society we strive to reflect.
