Strong Academics. Joyful Learning. A Community Where Every Child Is Known. 12-Oct-2020
PS1’s Mission is to spark curious and critical thinkers who confidently contribute to their communities.
A School Built for the Elementary Years: As a dedicated K–6 school, PS1 focuses intentionally on the years when children develop the academic foundations, confidence, and habits of mind that shape future success. Small classes and deep relationships allow every child to be known, supported, and appropriately challenged.
Joyful Learning, Meaningful Challenge: At PS1, students learn through inquiry, discussion, research, writing, mathematical reasoning, and creative problem-solving. Teachers meet students where they are and help them grow into confident thinkers, effective communicators, and resilient learners who are prepared for increasingly complex work.
Learning Through Pluralism: Pluralism is both our goal and our method. Students learn alongside people with different backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, strengthening their ability to listen, collaborate, think critically, and contribute thoughtfully to their communities and the wider world.
Families choose PS1 because they want:
-Strong academics without sacrificing childhood
-A school where every child is deeply known
-Small classes and personalized learning
-Meaningful opportunities for leadership
-A diverse community where multiple perspectives are valued
-Graduates who are prepared for middle school and beyond
Families often tell us they came to PS1 because of the community and stayed because of the intellectual growth they saw in their children.
The Result: By sixth grade, PS1 students are confident communicators, thoughtful collaborators, critical thinkers, and compassionate leaders. They leave with strong academic foundations, a deep understanding of themselves, and the skills to thrive in a wide range of middle school environments.
